Canada World Youth Is Hosting a Forum for Aboriginal Youth
MONTREAL, June 21, 2012 – On June 25-29, Canada World Youth (CWY), a non-profit organization which offers international leadership programs for young people, will be hosting a learning forum on the Morley Nakoda Nation in Alberta for the 10 Aboriginal youth from across Canada who recently participated in the International Aboriginal Youth Internship Initiative.
Canada World Youth was pleased to be among the organizations selected to deliver the Canadian International Development Agency’s International Aboriginal Youth Internship Initiative, through which these 10 Aboriginal youth participated in internships in Nicaragua, Peru and Tanzania. This initiative aims to develop essential skills for employment; to improve the skills of interns to engage in international development; to enhance their awareness and understanding of international development issues; and to increase their capacity to promote international development work in Canada.
As a follow up to the internships, CWY will be hosting a learning forum for the 10 interns as well as for representatives of the three partner organizations in Nicaragua, Peru and Tanzania who hosted the interns. Eleven other CWY alumni who completed similar CWY programs, such as the Youth Leaders in Action and Global Learner programs, will also be attending to share their experiences and lessons learned.
The specific objectives of the learning forum are to:
- share good practices and lessons learned for Aboriginal youth-centred development-program;
- enhance the capacity of organizations in designing & implementing Aboriginal youth-centred development-programs;
- promote Aboriginal youth leadership in local and International development projects;
- provide a forum for Aboriginal youth to share their experiences in local and International development projects.
In 2011-12, CWY offered international leadership programs to 211 Aboriginal youth volunteers from across the country. This forum will allow CWY to perfect its programming for Aboriginal youth and ensure that it continues to meet the needs of upcoming volunteers.
Founded in 1971, CWY is a leader in developing leadership-, health- and environment-oriented international education programs for young people aged 15 to 29. A non-profit organization, Canada World Youth is dedicated to enriching the lives of young people who have a desire to become informed and active global citizens.
