Canada World Youth and Métis Nation of Saskatchewan Offer New Opportunities to Saskatchewan’s Métis Youth
Montréal, July 20, 2012 – Louis Moubarak, President and Chief Executive Officer of Canada World Youth (CWY), and Robert Doucette, President of the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan (MNS) signed a memorandum of understanding today confirming their organisations’ strong commitment to Saskatchewan’s Métis youth. The two organizations will work together to ensure that these youth are offered opportunities to assume leadership roles in their own communities as well as in international cooperation.
“CWY and the MNS” explains Moubarak, “will be identifying specific leadership, entrepreneurship and mentorship opportunities for Métis youth, with a focus on experiential educational opportunities in international cooperation, such as the programs CWY that has been offering over the past 40 years. By the end of 2012-2013 CWY will have offered national and international leadership programs to 225 Aboriginal youth volunteers from across Canada since 2009-2012 fiscal year.”
According to Robert Doucette, President of the MNS, “both of our organizations are committed to strengthening and supporting the knowledge and skills of Métis youth to play leadership roles in their communities and increase their involvement in international cooperation. To this end, we wish to join forces in a way that represents our collective interests, both at the national and international levels. CWY and the MSN have therefore decided to adopt six key principles to guide our collaborations.”
Guiding Principles of the Memorandum of Understanding
- Youth Focus: Create an optimal environment for youth decision-making in order to facilitate their learning and engagement in community affairs and international cooperation.
- Skills Training: Equip Métis youth with relevant skills and training that would allow them to play leadership roles in their communities and on the international scene.
- Community Involvement: Provide the opportunity for youth to share their experiences and lessons learned in their own communities.
- Holistic Approach: Actively engage and consult with Métis youth, community members, Elders, leadership, organizations, and corporate sponsors in Métis youth leadership-building.
- Respect: Develop experiential learning opportunities that are respectful and responsive to the diverse, current realities of Métis youth.
- Safety and Well-being: The health and safety of youth are paramount in all of our international educational programs.
